When Do I Spay or Neuter

Is it worth it you ask?

When is a good time to do it?

Have you weighed up the pros and cons?

Have you asked your breeder when is the best time to have this done?

What of your vet?

There is a minefield of information out there on this and only you can make an informed decision on this once you have all the facts at hand.

You will hear many stories on this and this is personal to me and my experience. This is what I tell my puppy buyers. When males are neutered too young, before their hormones are full on, they do not gain the muscle that an adult male should have and look like a gangly puppy for the rest of their lives. I now don't recommend neutering a male till 24 months. If your male is an only leave him intact if you can and no they wont turn aggressive if he has his bits.

As for females and spaying, Do not spay before a first season as the same will happen a gangly pup for life or late in life. So once a season has passed you can spay after 3 months and never ever allow a vet to spay whilst in season as she can bleed to death.

If spayed to early they usually end up with incontinence and this is very hard to deal with. Most large breeds don't come into season till 9 - 15  months so the timeline works out just right as you have to wait the 3 months after. So this is 12-18 months. If your bitch comes into season early please wait as the growth plates have not finished and spaying to early can cause problems in your dog. So my advice is to wait till at least over a year.  If an only and you can safely keep her from getting pregnant leave her intact if you can. Again as above it will not make her aggressive in any way.

If your dog is showing aggression please do not spay or neuter as a quick fix as this can in fact make them worse. Go the route of a behaviourist first to find out what the problem is.

REMEMBER THESE ARE GREAT DANES

4 Oct 2013

Lets talk dog bedding

This is a non chewable bed for your Dane and can have a replacement liner put in by yourselves. Tuffies is the link

raised bed put on one of these and your set

Or you can go for a big plastic bed with vet bed or even a single quilt

Whatever you choose make sure you have at least 2 one out one for wash.

Enjoy now.

Collars and Leads

Yes there are loads out there for your pooch and me personally I like a half choke one they come in lots of pretty colours now and is good for that chink on it if they pull. Remember to check collar every month and extend it for your growing Dane

If you don’t like these there are leather ones out there,
This is personal to me do remember this and
you may like or have used them in the past that’s good.
but don’t use a full nylon one as it can snap, as they are flimsy on Danes, as they are not designed for the bigger breed really

If you put in some training for you and the dog it will help having the right collar and lead on so they don’t pull you over.

At the 6-month stage they will test the boundaries and again at 9 months this is when a dogmatic comes in very handy.  It is very much like a bridle for a horse and used in the exact same way.  They are not cruel and yes the dog can still bite it isn’t a muzzle. Its and aid for a dog that pulls a lot and can topple you over as these are not wee dogs

Yes even Al can walk two dogs on a dogmatic and they walk nice once they realise they wont be released from it as they don’t like it in the beginning. They learn very quickly dogmatic on and then walkies so they comply.

For a growing Dane frequent the pound shops till they are at least 6 months and then splash out on collars.

Dogmatic from 6 months because of the jaw area, because it is still growing.

Extendable leads do not ever ever buy one even the one designed for the larger breed it will snap as they will rear up and take off or worse you release to the length of it and your Dane goes into the road and is killed and this isn’t to scare you it does happen as these things are dangerous and should be banned.
I will never recommend them.
