The beginnings of raw feeding an older dog

If late to the game, not all is lost if you go the raw route and I can help here if this is your wish of course.

I may ramble on but I feel raw feeding is a good way to go for your dog.

I have Great Danes well the title of the blog gives that away doesn’t it.

Now to begin your adventure of raw for your dog.

Do not give a last meal of kibble go cold turkey here and yes pun intended.  Put down a raw meal and it should be a room temperature in the beginning so they are not put of if its cold. Much like a human baby here really.

If refused remove after 20 minutes and do not feed anything else till next meal. They maybe stubborn here but you have to wait it out and not feed them. Put in a sealed container in fridge and remove an hour before feeding and give. I know you'll be thinking she is cruel nope I am not its for their benefit as much as mine.

I think I was lucky when I did the change over as none refused anything I gave. In my early days I did make mistakes just like any of us will and do. I still learn from my raw feeding too. This isn't a fad or trend for me. Its a source of food for my dogs and good food as well. I have good suppliers and it works out at £1.50 per head per dog roughly so  £10.50 per week maybe £12 but no higher than that.

Tell me where I'd buy a good kibble for that as I prefer a grain free one and they retail in at £60 per bag so work out at £15 per week per dog.

I do not belittle anyone that kibble feeds it is after all personal choice and I know one lass that feeds both in 4 meals a day and yes her kibble is grain free.

Choose one meat per week and build it from there for your dog. If your dog has been used to the odd raw treat you can introduce more meats quicker as in the first week after day 4.

We usually begin with chicken. Minced is fine but make sure there is bone in it as they need this or you will get loose poos.  If an older dog try legs, carcasses and necks too here he might play with them to begin with but allow this. Also if you have a greedy dog they might barf it back let them eat it again and I know its gross but most will anyways.

I also feed twice daily and yes some do go to the one meal a day and do not panic over this as long as you feed about 3/4pm your dog will be fine more so if a large breed of dog as we all fret over bloat happening. Also if he decides he leaves some and wants it later this is ok too so no panicking as long as he has had something in his tummy earlier he'll be fine

Now here we go. My amounts are for Great Danes and can be adjusted accordingly for smaller or larger breeds.

All amounts are 1kg per meal unless stated. Also if looking lean increase and if fat decrease. Your eyes are your guide here to along with them scales which for the first 3 weeks you will weigh everything. Now do buy another set for your dog as mixing them up is not advisable and will give you the upset tummy.

Dinner
liver, kidney and tripe only half a pound of liver and kidney, and not all dogs will eat it but mix it in with the other minces to begin with and it should be fine.

Keep adding in more foods now every 4-7 days to give variety.

Liver for my lot is roughly 530-600 gram per week which does work out at 5% in the end as if I feed more it makes them loose and vitamin A is not good when over fed to the dogs but good for them in the right amounts.

I as a rule don’t feed veg or any other supplements. Mine have never needed them and also mine wont eat veg unless carrots raw and whole, or bananas again whole and munched on. If bunged up or poorly this is a different matter.

Offal has to be in the diet for them for health production but I introduce this slowly for an older dog so not to overwhelm his system. I don't include tripe in this as most dogs can tolerate it from the beginning and not all say its offal but meat. You decide for yourself what you want it for, for your dog.

Watch the red meats and if loose adjust accordingly.

Tripe and chicken minces are a big hit in the beginning for the change over and remember too have it at room temp to start. These are easy digestible and gentle on the stomach usually.

If you have a gulper try semi frozen for a bit to see if they'll eat it or hold the end of the leg so they tear at it. This is to slow them down if you can. There is bowls out there to stop them gulping as long as the suckers are on the floor no problem or they just tip them out well mine do.

When starting for me mine went through a thin stage and bypassed the porky unless they where already fat and they started to loose the weight slowly for my old dear at 8 years. Yes you can overfeed on raw too as I say its still a learning curve for me and I have been feeding this way for awhile now.  My boy was my main concern because he got stressed so easily and now at 4 he looks lean but good for the raw he gets. He has a very very shiny coat (he's a mantle) loves his food and is always looking for more.

I know its a mine field out there but I hope my menu can help with an older dog doing the change over. It took about 6 months to notice the lean muscle mass on the pooches. Please do not panic and keep feeding raw. You will notice other changes in your dog and most are good as in less hyper, less manic, sleeping better are some for me.  With time you will begin to trust yourself on what to feed.

Plus your dog will drink a lot less on raw this is very normal, but do keep an eye on the back end
Now for bone this is a must in the dogs diet and build up slowly as too much bone can make them constipated which is never good. You are aiming for a firm poo not hard. Please be aware of the changes in colour as well for an indiction of whats happening plus it does change colour with what you give them to eat. Mine now poo if I am lucky once a day and its small and firm. No black bag for the clean up.

When feeding fish for the first time please do freeze it some do regurgitate it back and eat to only regurgitate again.  If this happens mince it and put in another meat for a few weeks.

I also have to stress here I am UK based so none of our fish is posionous for our dogs. It can be given fresh or freeze as you wish and feed at a later date.

In the winter months dogs need a wee bitty extra and this is ok because they will self regulate themselves come spring. Dogs are very smart that way. Carcasses are a winner here for a hungry pooch so they can take their time and have a good chew. Good for their teeth too as in a toothbrush as a rule we haven't had to brush any of the dogs teeth in years. They are all pearly white would you believe. Its still part of the grooming process so please have a gander under the big jowls and check.

Now I know this is a subject most don't like talking about but poos you have to keep an eye on and if he is having loose ones a lot have a well check done at the vets for peace of mind. Pumpkin mashed helps as does banana I kid you not for the loose poos.

Do remember the buggers can be in that bin when your out and eaten something nasty to give them that upset stomach. Also some dogs can't tolerate pork or dairy in their diets, in fact dairy isn't easily digested by dogs. If you want them to have a little slurp of milk go for a full fat goats milk, do remember that this will put weight on them so just a little drop if doing so. All my pups loved goats milk and still do love an odd bowl of it weekly. I am sucker and warm it up first just like it would be at the breast.

Also for the upset stomachs if your dog is poorly I usually starve for 24 hours but if really unwell pop them along to the vets for that well check and start again the next day but slowly with minces to begin with and add in bone the following day till he is back to normal all done slowly.

If not eating do not give in and remove the meal and try again later at the next meal. Do not give any treats whats so ever and don't fuss just remove. Keep your routine the same do not change it and they will come round eventually as its us humans that freak more than them. Dogs wont starve normally they will eat eventually.

Also do not feed weight baring bones of any kind this really means the bones from the cows leg as they can crack and chip teeth and even grind them down.

A list of foods we have fed and do so for an older dog over the course of 4-8 weeks in total.

Chicken

Turkey

Rabbit if sourced right we like to leave on the fur too and have whole more so for the adults. If you can't stomach that try looking for minced rabbit.

Veal

Beef

Heart

Tongue

Liver

Kidney

Veggies (only if they'll eat them) not essential but some like some don't.

Whole Eggs with shell.

FOR COLUMBO AND HIS OWNER ADELE
THE KICK UP THE ARSE I NEEDED.

Now for the boyo Columbo a Fawn Great Dane no less
as went from 63kg to 64.4kgs
This was over a 6 day period and prior to this he was fed Royal Canin but he wasn't enjoying it as he would leave his meals and was worrying his owner greatly hence asking about the raw diet and deciding to give it a whirl. I know early days but a great improvement on not eating and not gaining in 4 months and was in fact starting to lose weight. He is on an increased amount the now to gain the weight and we will be adjusting in a few months unless he self regulates himself of course, but he may need this amount due to his exercise levels. As all dogs are different after all.
to say his owner is happy is an understatement. I hope Adele will allow a few pics of him in a few months of the before and after shots.

Please keep a diary in the beginning so you know what your dog is eating and what. This helps you more than the dog of course. Remember the golden rule if thin feed more if porky feed less.
If in doubt ask.
