Some dogs can go through
this stage and it can be a bit of a pain for both you and the dog.
This is from my experience
and some might not be mentioned but if you have a few please do share.
If this happens you have to
consider a few things
Sudden changes?
Have you checked the teeth?
Have you checked the back
end?
Has anything changed in the
house?
Is there tension?
If a girl is she due in
season if not spayed.
Are you showing signs of
stress and yes your dog will pick up on this.
Are you treating between
meals?
Is your dog healthy? If
unsure go to the vets.
Have you dropped a bowl or
a loud bang when they’ve been eating?
Is there one food they are
not eating?
Is this a new supplier?
What to do for them.
Some dogs need a little
persuasion.
There is 2 ways of doing
this but remember its ok for a dog to go without food for a few days. It won’t
harm them most newbies freak at this but seriously this wont harm them I
promise.
1
Revert to the food that is
most enjoyed for a few days and add some Luke warm bone broth, slowly start
mixing new things in over a period of time. I do this if ill really but my
other option below is the one I prefer to do.
2
In my house I know the food
I give is good and has no issues my dogs can decide for themselves if they want
to eat it or not.
If they don’t eat it within
10 minutes that’s it, I pick up the food, till next dinner time, I am
after all not a restaurant and unfortunately for them I do know what is good for them.
If she/he is a healthy dog
she/he won’t starve herself but equally he/she needs to realise you are not a
restaurant with a menu and you want to avoid teaching him/her that if food is
refused you will present him/her with another option.
Let her/her go without
food, no treats either, until she/he realises the choice is their own! Equally
important to remember is that many raw feeders fast their dogs so the idea of
not eating for 24hrs so shouldn’t really stress anyone out, quite a few people
will even say it has great benefits.
If you are starting to
cook, and present loads of different new options in the hope your dog will eat,
you are kind of making a bit of a rod for your own back. Remember your
name is not Jamie Oliver. You shouldn’t fuss or get stressed with food, as
before you know it your dog will start feeling stressed too about food and not
know why; your dog will pick up on your stress levels you see.
If your dog is under the
weather.
If your dog is under the
weather, don’t force the food issue, what can help though. You need to keep the
dog hydrated, is to serve some luke warm bone broth with some green tripe most
will eat this but if not please hydrate your dog by any means and if goes on
for more than 3 days take them to the vets.
