DOG CONTRACTS

Are they legal? yes they are even a badly written one. The wording is key here. how many have a re-written a fair few over the years. I now have a three page one and have a copy for myself to for my records. All signed by all parties.

Are they worth doing? yes for your peace of mind

Can you take your client to court and vice versus for breach, but breach of what? You can take your client to court for breach if they put the dog into rescue or sell the dog on without permission. I would hope if the dog has to be re-homed they'd contact me first to see if the home is suitable and another contract signed in their name and not hide the fact they no longer have the dog or just phone you and demand you come get the pup or older dog for whatever reason and then slate you on social media.

they can take you to court also for breach but only if the dog is faulty hence the trip to the vets within 72 hours as most come for their pups at the weekend. if not fit for sale the pup is returned and moneys are given back. This is when vets are conflating together over the health of the puppy.

I do state in my contracts I want the dog returned to me as many rescues don't give back the dog when they actually know who's it is and then slate said breeder for not taking it back when they have tried in the first instance. Catch 22 there which is annoying.

I include all the bits on welfare and how the dog is a live being and I can't predict its out come as an adult

I do have confident pups that goes without saying and I want that to continue. So I send not just a contract but a full on puppy pack with loads of information about my breed.

I even have a page on here on what we did first so it gives clients an idea of what we do. So when it comes to signing the contract they have read it fully and not the bits they like and know that I reared these pups and love them too, so want whats best for them and I have waiting lists usually from folks that would like an older dog after being vetted of course and the older pup accessed to see who is suitable.

I don't sell on the older pups so I don't benefit twice. I vet the homes carefully and then stalk them every few months. yes some have slipped through the cracks but I can usually tell a good one or not.

So if taking on a pup please make sure you know what your taking on and when they present a contract please sign it and stay in contact with your breeder. if you don't she may start stalking your social media or even write a letter if that doesn't work.

This is to safeguard you as much as the breeder as a pup is a big commitment and we don't want to fall out over it.
